BUILDING NATIONS – 2023 IMPACT AWARDS
​WINNERS

The 2023 Building Nations Impact Awards celebrate those projects, individuals and teams which have exemplified climate consciousness and a focus on social outcomes. Check out the winners from 2023 below.

INFRASTRUCTURE DECARBONISATION AWARD

This award recognises projects which embed an outstanding ‘whole of life’ approach to reducing carbon to respond to a carbon zero future. This award celebrates projects that embed carbon reduction into decision making and delivery.

WINNER:
Ports of Auckland for Sparky – the first full sized electric tug

Sparky is a world first which has received international recognition. The judges were impressed with the Ports of Auckland team’s willingness to take a risk during the pandemic, and their perseverance to overcome perceived barriers to the development of an important new technology. The judges commend the team on their fantastic work to break the mould and set an example for others to follow.

  •  Beca Limited for Te Huhi Raupō – Taranaki Base Hospital Renal Unit
  • AECOM, Waka Kotahi, Auckland Transport and KiwiRail for Project Emissions Estimation Tool

 

THE SOCIAL OUTCOMES AWARD

This award recognises projects which have delivered outstanding social outcomes through collaboration with Māori, stakeholders and communities. The approach to collaboration and the tangible outcomes achieved raises the bar in delivering best practice in improving social outcomes and serves as a model for future projects.

WINNER:
Te Aupōuri Iwi Development Trust and RCP for Puna Wai Ora and Te Hiku Drought Relief Programme

RCP’s Puna Wai Ora and Te Hiku Drought Relief Programme addresses both New Zealand’s existing infrastructure deficit, as well as the challenge of climate change. The judges reflected the importance of the project’s equity implications in the context of water as a human right, and a future where we will have both not enough, and too much water all at once. They congratulate RCP on their project which will be a game changer for future communities.

  • Fulton Hogan for Ruakura Inland Port – Stage 1

 

 

BIODIVERSITY, WATER AND HERITAGE CONSERVATION OUTCOMES AWARD

This award recognises projects which deliver outstanding outcomes in one or more of biodiversity, water quality, and heritage conservation. This award recognises projects where restoration, regeneration and enhancement considerations have been embedded into whole of life decision making leading to improved outcomes. The approach to improving outcomes through restoration, regeneration and enhancement raises the bar in delivering best practice and serves as a model for future projects.

 

WINNER:
Fulton Hogan’s State Highway 10 Culvert Replacement project

Fulton Hogan’s State Highway 10 Culvert Replacement project created a more holistic solution for the environment. The project revitalised the quarry by listening to the community and creating a lasting legacy for Iwi to take forward as a commercial opportunity. The judges reflected that the Fulton Hogan team looked to find a new way of doing something by reflecting Iwi and the community’s desire to restore local connection in the area. Congratulations to the team on their willingness to engage deeply and adapt throughout the process to create improved outcomes for future generations and the environment.

NEXT GENERATION LEADER AWARD

The Next Generation Leader Award celebrates infrastructure professionals under 35 years of age who have demonstrated exceptional and sustained commitment to changing the way things are done. Infrastructure New Zealand invites next generation leaders who are visionaries, innovators and disruptors to apply and to demonstrate how they are already giving back to their communities.

WINNER:
Sarah Hall, Civil Foreperson, Acciona Construction

Sarah is a warm and genuine leader who has already and will continue to support the “voiceless” amongst her colleagues and community. The judges were impressed by her people-focussed and inclusive leadership style, as well as her clear ambition. Sarah puts her team first and shows an incredible level of empathy – a quality which often may not be easily found on a construction site. This approach extends to her dedication to mentoring others outside of work and will stand her in good stead as she works to bring others with her on her journey to success.

 

The judges also reflected that Sarah is the kind of leader that they would both want to work for and want their children to work for in the years to come. Congratulations Sarah, you are the Building Nations 2023 Next Generation Leader”
