The Productivity Commission has two inquiries underway.
The first was briefly covered in last month’s edition of InfraRead and is an inquiry into what immigration policy settings would best facilitate New Zealand’s long-term economic growth and promote the wellbeing of New Zealanders. Preliminary findings and recommendations will be released in October 2021 and a final report will be presented to the government in April 2022.
The second inquiry is into the drivers of persistent disadvantage within people’s lifetimes and across generations. This inquiry is currently in its infancy. The government has asked the commission to prepare the Terms of Reference, and the commission has in-turn sought public input to develop them.
The terms of reference will be presented to Cabinet in November 2021. Subject to Cabinet approval, the commission will then have 12 months to conduct the inquiry and present its findings and recommendations to the government. Public input in developing the terms of reference closes tomorrow, Friday, 27 August. If you are keen to have your say, please visit the inquiry webpage here.
