Legislation and Other Submissions

December was marked by the long-awaited announcement of the RMA replacement, The Planning Bill and The Natural Environment Bill. The reform has been touted as a “once-in-a-generation” opportunity to overhaul a resource management system that is complex and costly. The reforms are expected to remove the duplication that currently burdens the system, standardise processes and minimise complexity and compliance costs. The bills were introduced to Parliament on 9 December, and the Environment Committee is currently calling for public submissions on the two bills, closing on 13 February.

INZ has made a submission on the Land Transport (Revenue) Amendment Bill. The Bill aims to shift to fairer, usage-based charging, digital road user charges, and expanded tolling frameworks. Submissions closed on 8 January. View all INZ submissions here.

Events

INZ was hosted by Watercare in early December to share insights from the recent study tour to the UK, put on by UK Department for Business and Trade, and British Expertise International. Panellists Jamie Sinclair, Jeremy Hall, Stacey Millar and Nick Leggett unpacked their learnings from global best practice to innovation and discussed the opportunity New Zealand has to lift its ambition in delivering bigger and better infrastructure projects. Our summary report can be read here, or the full report can be accessed here.

INZ concluded a busy year by celebrating with members at events in Auckland, Christchurch and Wellington. The events provided an opportunity for reflection on the impact INZ has collectively made across the sector this year. It was a great way to catch up with members in person, whose ongoing support and engagement continue to drive our momentum.
