We have also welcomed Kanoa Lloyd in April as our Strategy and Engagement Manager. Kanoa will lead engagement with members, stakeholders and government as we continue to advocate for a more strategic, long-term approach to infrastructure investment.
Policy
Infrastructure New Zealand (INZ) submitted on the Data and Statistics (Census) Amendment Bill. While INZ supports the intent to modernise population data collection, we note there is currently insufficient evidence that administrative data can replace a traditional census without loss of critical information. Read the full submission here.
We have continued engagement with both government and industry on the fuel supply situation, working closely with members to understand impacts on the ground while facilitating the flow of information between government and industry.
Work is also ongoing with members to develop our 2026 election manifesto. This will be released in July as a key resource for the sector ahead of the election.
Events
At the end of March, we hosted our Smart Funding for Infrastructure: Delivering with Confidence conference, bringing together more than 200 delegates from across government and industry. Continue reading for the full conference overview.
Two webinars led by Brad Olsen unpacked the latest economic data and analysis on the fuel supply situation.
Our AGM, held on 21 April and hosted by Tonkin + Taylor, reflected strong momentum across both the organisation and the sector. Chief Executive Nick Leggett emphasised INZ’s focus on pushing for a clear, consistent pipeline – ensuring long-term, joined-up planning that can withstand political change. Board Chair Fraser Wyllie reinforced this, noting INZ’s momentum and growing influence across media, policy and advocacy. The session also included a candid update from Associate Minister of Energy Shane Jones on fuel security challenges, with discussion focused on the role of diesel reserves and the need for greater system resilience.
We are pleased to welcome new members to our Industry Advisory Council: Alistair Kirk (Port of Auckland), Amy Barrett (Auckland Airport), Liam Hodgetts (Wellington City Council), Mark Crowle (Watercare), Rebecca MacDonald (Fonterra), and Susan Lucking (BNZ). They join a strong existing group of IAC members, further enhancing the depth of expertise guiding Infrastructure New Zealand’s work – view our full governance team here. We would also like to acknowledge the outgoing members Fraser Robertson, Stacey Millar, and Tracey Ryan for their leadership and service, including Tracey’s tenure as Chair and Fraser’s recent role on the Board.
To round out the events for April, we held our first event in Nelson, Resilience in the Regions, hosted by Stantec. Bringing together Rachel Boyack MP, Rob Service (NZTA) and Alec Louverdis (Nelson City Council), the discussion focused on the realities of responding to major weather events. A clear theme was the importance of learning from recent experiences and applying those lessons at a national level to strengthen resilience, improve coordination, and better prepare for future events.
